FAQ
Is there a Kelley Blue book for boats?
No, Kelley Blue Book does not publish values for boats; KBB covers cars, motorcycles, and some powersports, but explicitly states it has no boat pricing data, including for outboard motors and trailers.
The marine industry relies on a different set of "blue book" style guides instead, along with professional appraisals:
- NADA Marine Appraisal Guide: the closest equivalent to KBB for boats, commonly referenced by lenders and insurers for suggested list price and retail values.
- BUC Used Boat Price Guide: another price guide used by dealers and brokers for used vessels.
- ABOS Marine Blue Book: a marine-specific pricing reference used similarly to NADA and BUC.
The trouble with relying on any of these guides alone is that they produce a generic baseline figure. They don't account for your specific vessel's condition, engine hours, equipment, upgrades, or the demand in your local market, all of which can move a boat's value significantly in either direction. That's why lenders, insurers, courts, and estates typically require a documented appraisal from a qualified marine appraiser rather than a book number pulled off a website.
A professional boat appraisal starts with the same market data these guides use, then adds an on-site inspection of the vessel's hull, systems, and equipment to arrive at a defensible, USPAP-compliant value specific to your boat. This is especially important for insurance coverage, estate settlement, divorce proceedings, or financing, where a generic guide price won't hold up to scrutiny.
