FAQ
What boats hold their value the most?
Boats built by brands with tight production controls and strong reputations, especially premium center console fishing boats and bluewater cruising sailboats, tend to hold their value best. Understanding which vessels retain value can help you set realistic expectations when insuring, financing, or planning to sell a boat, but the only way to confirm what a specific vessel is worth today is through a professional boat appraisal.
What tends to hold value
- Limited-production center consoles and offshore fishing boats. Brands known for tight build quality control, dedicated dealer networks, and strong demand from serious anglers tend to depreciate more slowly than mass-market runabouts, particularly in the 20 to 30 foot range.
- Bluewater cruising sailboats from established builders. Well-known offshore cruising sailboat brands with reputations for seaworthiness and craftsmanship often hold resale value better than production coastal cruisers.
- Classic and vintage models from durable, well-regarded builders. Some older boats built with heavy-duty construction (foam-filled hulls, for example) have developed collector followings and can even appreciate rather than depreciate over decades.
- Well-maintained vessels with complete service records. Regardless of brand, documented maintenance, updated systems, and clean title history consistently support stronger resale value than brand reputation alone.
Brand reputation is only part of the picture. Two vessels of the same make and model can carry very different values depending on hours, engine condition, electronics, hull condition, and how well the boat has been stored and maintained. That's why general brand rankings are a useful starting point but not a substitute for an actual valuation.
If you need a documented value for insurance, financing, estate settlement, or a potential sale, our appraisers inspect the vessel's condition, systems, and equipment on-site and prepare a USPAP-compliant report with a defensible concluded value.
